UNDER the Land Public Transport Act 2010, the Land Public Transport Commission will be the regulator and licensing authority for all public service vehicles including freight via road and rail. These functions are currently being carried out by the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board, Department of Railways and the Commissioner of Tourism of the Ministry of Tourism.

The Land Public Transport Act 2010, which was passed by Parliament in May, however has not come into force pending the necessary amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987.

Until the Land Public Transport Act 2010 is gazetted, the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board, Department of Railways and the Commissioner of Tourism will continue to perform their usual functions.

In the meantime, the Land Public Transport Commission is carrying out various key activities. This includes building up its capacity as an organization and setting up the necessary infrastructure in preparation for full operations.
